State Grid’s Green Ark Program Boosts Mangrove Ecosystem Protection in Zhejiang
On July 25, ahead of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem (July 26), a series of measures were implemented by State Grid Taizhou Power Supply Company to strengthen conservation efforts for the local mangrove ecosystem. Under the public welfare initiative State Grid Green Ark Program launched by the State Grid Corporation of China, these actions are designed to provide reliable power support for the mangrove area and enhance biodiversity protection of this unique ecological system.
Mangrove ecosystems are renowned for their rich biodiversity. Beyond mangrove plants, semi-mangrove plants, and mangrove-associated plants—all photosynthetic producers—a diverse array of fauna, including fish, benthic organisms, birds, insects, and mammals, as well as decomposer microorganisms, are supported by the ecosystem. Coupled with abiotic environments such as tidal flats, tidal creeks, and shallow waters, a vibrant coastal habitat is collectively formed. This ecosystem is not only a natural nursery where shelter and breeding grounds are offered to numerous fish, shrimp, crabs, and shellfish, but also serves as a critical transit hub and energy refueling station for migratory birds.
Primary habitats of rare species are specifically targeted for protection by the State Grid Green Ark Program. Green power supply systems have been established in and around these habitats to provide reliable clean energy and digital tools, supporting biodiversity research and conservation practices and thereby enhancing biodiversity protection efforts. The current mangrove conservation initiative is exemplified as a vivid practice of the program’s core philosophy.
Presently, focus is being placed by State Grid Taizhou Power Supply Company on the power grid systems surrounding the mangrove ecosystem, and a paired service framework has been established. A stable collaborative mechanism has been forged with the local Ecology and Environment Bureau, Natural Resources and Planning Bureau, and research institutions to deliver tailored green power solutions. Ongoing efforts include the prioritization of clean electricity supply for mangrove monitoring devices and protection facilities, with digital tools deployed to optimize electricity management.
State Grid Taizhou Power Supply Company stated that State Grid’s mission of advancing green development will continue to be fulfilled, with the State Grid Green Ark Program serving as a key driver to deepen involvement in mangrove ecosystem conservation. Further optimization of the layout of green power grids around mangroves is planned, coverage of clean electricity will be expanded, and more monitoring devices and protection facilities will be enabled to access green power. Additionally, collaboration with relevant departments and research institutions will be strengthened, customized power solutions will be refined, and digital technologies will be leveraged to improve electricity utilization efficiency. Through these concrete measures, mangroves will be safeguarded more effectively by green power, making significant contributions to biodiversity conservation and regional ecological development.(By Jing Feng)
