State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company Launches Scaled V2G Application Demonstration in Industrial Park Microgrid

A total of 28 discharges by contracted vehicle owners, contributing 1,862 kilowatt-hours of electricity; two discharges from non-contracted participants, delivering 7 kilowatt-hours in total; and cumulative earnings exceeding RMB 4,600—these are among the recent outcomes achieved by State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company over the past month, as the city of Changzhou was selected as one of China’s first batch of pilot cities for scaled vehicle-to-grid (V2G) application.

In early April, the first list of pilot cities for scaled V2G applications was released, with one city and three projects selected in Jiangsu Province. As part of this initiative, State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company launched a demonstration project for scaled V2G application in industrial park microgrids, establishing Changzhou’s first closed-loop V2G demonstration site within the microgrid of the Innovation Industrial Park in Wujin National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

The microgrid was jointly developed by Changzhou Binhu Construction and Development Group Co., Ltd. and State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company. It integrates energy sources, power grids, loads, storage systems, and electric vehicles into a coordinated smart energy system, offering a replicable and scalable model for green, low-carbon transitions in industrial parks. Targeting a large-scale usage scenario involving over 200 electric vehicles within the park, the initial phase of the microgrid includes five designated V2G interaction zones, equipped with two 60-kW high-power V2G smart chargers and sixteen 7-kW units. This system presents a comprehensive solution encompassing participation models, pricing mechanisms, technological innovation, and insurance coverage. “We have not only achieved technological integration but, more importantly, established a sustainable commercial operation model,” said Chen Liang, General Manager of State Grid Wujin District Power Supply Company.

Regarding participation models, State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company has introduced three differentiated participation options to provide vehicle owners with flexible choices. Under the contracted custodial model, participants sign long-term agreements to receive exclusive parking spots and discharging compensation up to RMB 2.5 per kilowatt-hour. The first group of seven contracted vehicle owners has already formed a stable demonstration cluster. In the temporary participation model, regular vehicle owners can schedule discharge time slots via a WeChat group and receive instant cash incentives, with cumulative participation leading to potential upgrade to contracted status. In addition, the company has implemented a demand response mechanism, offering additional subsidies during grid peak-shaving periods, with contracted users enjoying priority access.

State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company has also made breakthroughs in both technological innovation and risk protection, significantly enhancing the user experience and market acceptance of V2G technology. On the technical front, two core innovations were addressed: the intelligent “seamless switching” feature enables vehicles to automatically enter standby mode upon connection, allowing autonomous smart switching between charging and discharging; meanwhile, the innovative “real-time revenue” system breaks industry conventions by transferring discharging profits to users in cash immediately, greatly increasing user engagement.

Notably, the company has pioneered the nation’s first “Integrated Charging and Discharging Insurance” product, covering multiple dimensions such as battery safety, grid operational stability, and income protection for vehicle owners. This comprehensive risk management solution directly addresses critical bottlenecks hindering the promotion of V2G technology, setting a new benchmark for the industry.

In recent years, Changzhou has actively developed advanced energy application models including smart energy use, shared battery swapping, grid-storage interaction, V2G integration, and mobile charging. The city has built over 100,000 charging piles, with peak charging load nearing 200,000 kilowatts—laying a solid foundation for large-scale vehicle-grid interaction.
