State Grid Kuitun Power Supply Company Upgrades Monitoring System at its First GIS Substation

On December 16th, State Grid Kuitun Power Supply Company completed an upgrade to its monitoring system at the 220kV Dushanzi Substation, its first 220kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS). This upgrade involved installing online partial discharge (PD) sensors on GIS equipment, further enhancing grid reliability and intelligence, and ensuring a more stable and efficient power supply during the peak winter season.

The 220kV Dushanzi Substation, the first of its kind for State Grid Kuitun Power Supply Company, serves as a critical hub, powering the Dushanzi Petrochemical Tianli High-tech Industrial Park, surrounding petrochemical industries, and residential customers. The high operating voltage and confined spaces within GIS equipment created high electric field strength, increasing the risk of internal defects. However, newer GIS installations previously lacked adequate monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.

To enhance its situational awareness of grid equipment at this vital substation, a key regional hub responsible for power distribution in the Dushanzi area, the online GIS partial discharge monitoring system was implemented. This cutting-edge technology significantly elevates the substation’s intelligence and operational capabilities, ensuring stable grid operation and providing a robust and reliable power supply to support regional economic and social development.

Functioning as a sophisticated diagnostic tool, the online GIS partial discharge monitoring system acts like a “smart stethoscope,” enabling real-time monitoring and diagnosis of partial discharge activity within GIS equipment. When partial discharge occurs inside the GIS, the rapid charge transfer at the discharge point generates short-duration current pulses and a broad spectrum of electromagnetic signals. The sensors detect these signals, allowing for timely identification and mitigation of partial discharge, effectively preventing equipment malfunctions and ensuring stable grid operation.

Following the installation of the online GIS partial discharge monitoring system at the 220kV Dushanzi Substation, the system can provide a continuous assessment of equipment performance and status, even under fluctuating weather conditions and internal operational disturbances. The system’s real-time, precise monitoring of internal partial discharge activity enables early detection of potential insulation defects, preventing faults before they occur. This predictive capability provides strong technical support and safeguards for the healthy operation of power equipment and accident prevention.
