State Grid Luoyang Power Company Electric Power Engines Drive the "Sanbengzi（Three-wheel Motorcycle) " Industry to Sail Abroad

“Reversing, please pay attention!” “Reversing, please pay attention!“On November 7, in the three-wheel motorcycle industrial cluster in Yuetan Town, Yanshi District, Luoyang, Henan, rows of brand-new “Sanbengzi” were assembled and ready to begin their journey overseas. Known as “China’s Three-Wheel Motorcycle Capital,” this area has witnessed the remarkable growth of the three-wheel motorcycle industry from scratch, expanding rapidly with the powerful support of the local electric power service from the State Grid Luoyang Electric Power Company.

Three-wheel motorcycles, known affectionately in China as “Sanbengzi” because of their “beng-beng” sound and bumpy ride. They have been produced in the Yuetan Town industrial cluster since the 1990s. Over 30 years of development, the industry has established a complete system, and today, electric “Sanbengzi” manufactured here are in high demand overseas, making life more convenient worldwide, with annual export sales reaching 280 million yuan. This success is closely tied to the strong support and service provided by the local power department.

“The quality of these three-wheel motorcycles is exceptional. This year, we ordered 1,000 units from Yanshi, primarily for sale in Central Asia, where they’re quickly bought up. We plan to order more,” Dawei, a buyer from Tajikistan, told the reporter, in Central Asia, cargo models are popular and primarily used for transporting goods, they are simple to operate, highly practical, and therefore very well-received in the region.

Inside the production workshop at Luoyang Zongshen Three-Wheel Motorcycle Company, production lines for vehicle assembly, laser welding, and more are in full operation. With advancements in production techniques and processes, the three-wheel motorcycle production line has been upgraded from manual equipment to full automation, significantly boosting efficiency. Once all components are available, a three-wheel motorcycle can be assembled in just 30 minutes. Product categories have expanded from fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles, passenger models, and more. To better produce various types and models of three-wheel motorcycles with different performance capabilities, while also improving production efficiency to meet the growing volume of orders, three-wheel motorcycle manufacturers in Yanshi District have introduced new production lines, which in turn have increased their electricity needs. To support the industry, the local power company has implemented a rural electrification improvement project, guiding companies on adjusting production shifts to lower costs and improve efficiency.

“We invested 8.85 million yuan to expand the substation capacity by 63 MVA, fully supporting future power demand. At the same time, we proactively provide on-site visiting services for companies, analyzing their electricity consumption, electricity costs, peak and off-peak usage, power adjustments, capacity, load, and other electrical information using energy efficiency bills. We actively guide companies to arrange production schedules through ‘off-peak production’ to reduce energy consumption and save electricity costs.” said Yao Hongliang, General Manager of State Grid Henan Yanshi Electric Power Company, as of 2024, we’ve saved companies 1.67 million yuan in electricity costs and successfully completed 48 high-voltage expansion and supporting projects in Yuetan Town with high quality, saving an additional 4.12 million yuan in power costs. At the same time, the company’s Discipline Inspection Commission strengthened the implementation of supervisory responsibilities, insisting on proactive and front-line supervision to ensure that each department fulfills its duties, helping clients reduce costs and improve efficiency.

“With reliable power, we’re more confident in the growth of our company,” remarked Yang Yanchang, International Trade Manager at Luoyang Zongshen Huaying Three-Wheel Motorcycle Co., Ltd. He introduced that their company has developed more than 30 types of three-wheel motorcycles, producing models suitable for various scenarios based on the market demands of different countries and regions. The production and export of these models rely heavily on stable and reliable power supply and high-quality electricity service.

In the three-wheel motorcycle industrial cluster in Yanshi District, there are many ‘Sanbengzi’ companies that benefit from power support like this. Xue Shuaijun, Head of the Industrial Development Department of the Yanshi District Advanced Manufacturing Development Zone, stated that by 2023, Yanshi’s three-wheel motorcycle output had reached over 500,000 units, with a production value of over 4 billion yuan.
