Tied with Thailand at least

Not surprising since Vietnam doesnt invest much in Olympics.
Plus Vietnam only has like 16 participants

I’m more worried of the low number of participants in comparison with population size

It just means they dont invest a lot in the Olympics like I said, what’s there to worry about?

And let’s not forget that the athletes would have to train like crazy if they ever want to be anywhere near the top ten, which is extremely harmful for their bodies. Most Vietnamese people don’t want to destroy their physical heath, psychological health as well as cut their lifespan short just for an extremely short-lived career, and even if they do then it’s very likely that their family and friends are opposed to it. The govn cares more about academic achievements and so does the people, and from a cultural perspective it makes perfect sense. Other countries in the Sinosphere are like that two but since they are richer and have more resources to spend elsewhere, it looks like they still care about some sports.

You die early being an athlete? Thats news to me

Do you have any idea how taxing it is for anyone to push themself so hard? It takes an insane level of dedication (not to mention many other factors) to be a high-level athlete. Having multiple injuries is the norm with the exception of some sports, using all of their waking time to train is the bare minimum requirements, their career is also very short-lived compared to almost all of the other careers, they are doomed to compete thousands if not millions of others if they ever want to have any memorable achievement, and most of them are forgotten once they retire unless they are the very best. It’s totally different from playing a sport for one’s own health and enjoyment.

Are u a doctor? Please show the the data that athletes have shorter lives LOL
My lord what a stupid excuse I’m reading on Reddit today

I may add, the glory of the Olympics faded years ago. Why invest in something meaningless as the Olympics.
Nothing wrong from any perspective I can think of.
OrangeIllustrious499
Yea I would say the glory of the olympics was when they had really unique and traditional sports such as marathon, weight throwing, archery, etc… The value of Olympics really got diluted when they started introducing more mainstream nicher professional sports.
It also doesn’t help that since 1936, Olympics has been more about showing off the host countries and their economic might so a ton of resources get drained just for the grand ceremonies and all the facilities they have to prepare. Countries are literally rejecting to host the Olympics rn due to uncertain economic situations.
Imo, Olympics basically went from a game where people around the world can participate in sports to basically getting money and show off to the world what your country is capable of. Olympics has lost its original sportive spirit long ago ever since 1936. It’s still occasionally fun to watch all the different games but it’s so diluted that I rather watch one focus tournament for one game.

Moreover, recently this Italian girl had to fight a mutant. The Olympic spirit… sucks.

It’s somewhat surprising that they don’t invest though. Sporting prestige is good for nationalism and it was a popular investment with other communist regimes

Before trying to attempt mockery, make sure you know how many participants each countries have first.
United States - 592
France - 573
Australia - 460
China - 388
Vietnam - 16

That’s even more alarming given Vietnam’s population
Based_Text
Not that alarming when you factor in that country barely invest in any Olympic sports other than football. We don’t have the money even though we have the population.
Dependent-Egg-3744
Vietnamese also not that alarmed that top local business leader would steal equivalent to ~10% of Vietnam GDP. If only scamming was in the Olympics
Similar_Trainer_8850
What do you mean no money? Vietnam is the 35th largest economy in the world!
bunchangon
But do you know where are we ranked in the population list? Gdp is not enough, what people need is food, home and better infrastructure. After those, some medals in the Olympic games are just a nice thing to have.
DogeoftheShibe
China is evem more alarming with that logic lMao

I wonder about India.

I dont think population had to do with facilities and sport’s popularity. Would you think that Vietnam would have anyone competing in the water polo, hammer throw or even equestrian?

yeah bro lets spend all the money we have on sports, fuck the economy but at least somebody won a medal amirite?
Royal_Yesterday
We literally spend tons of money on football though. We should just neglect sport and use that money to fund something else by your logic.
IzanamiFrost
Because it’s a popular form of entertainment and thus actually drives the economy forward
BNKhoa
It’s more like we spent a ton on sport, but most of the money actually went to the officials and bureaucrats instead of the intended parts.
Same with defence…

Alarming in what sense?
Do you think competing in a quadrennial olympics with say 300 people an important thing for a country that had to deal with two great wars + an ambargo that was just lifted 30 years ago.
I don’t think it’s that important for a country that’s trying to develop. It has more important issues.
