In London you get to enjoy 45 Celsius on the central line every summer. Meanwhile, cattle transportation mandates a maximum of 30 Celsius.
@Ap76QtkSUw575NAq
45°C and a free ruptured eardrum from how deafeningly loud it is.
@fullywokevoiddemon
And imma guess nausea from all the people who have yet to discover the magic of soap and deodorant? At least that’s the case in my country.
@Oakcamp
France?
法国?
@fullywokevoiddemon
Romania, actually. Lotta old ppl who don’t use deodorant. Or shower.
@swtvics
not just old people, trust me
@TheRealOriginalSatan
India. Every fucking morning and evening.
@Nobutthenagain
France stinks of perfume
@xSilverMC
Ah, the sweet suffocating scents of a department store’s perfume department. All concentrated into the space of a cheap studio apartment, but with even worse ventilation.
@[dexed]
And also air quality that is 15x worse than that on the surface
@Huge__Milkers
Sometimes it hits 50c

When the underground was built it was promoted as being “cooler down below” because the clay acted as a heat sink. Overtime, heat from the engines and the brakes has heated the clay to saturation point hence why it’s warm all year round now.
Retrofitting the line with a/c is difficult because you need somewhere to exhaust the heat and the tunnels are too small, unlike crossrail.
@EyyyyyyMacarena
It is unbelievable to me that the tube is not air conditioned. Is this for all lines or only a few?
@nomanslandishome
Only the Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City, and the Elizabeth line are air conditioned… Mainly because of the previously mentioned fact that their tunnels have a larger volume than all the others. The Piccadilly line is soon to have new trains with air conditioning situated under the chassis between the wheels.
@vc-10
Worth adding that the Overground and most of the National Rail trains have AC. In the summer I will take a more roundabout route to use air conditioned routes. Citymapper (a great route planning app) sometimes puts an ‘air conditioned’ route option on during the summer.
Citymapper(一个很好的路线规划应用程序)有时会在夏季提供“空调”路线选项。

@GabeLorca
The problem is not only to fit it on the trains, the issue is also that the heat has to go somewhere. If it goes out in the tunnels not only will it heat up the ground around it causing potential issues in the infrastructure, but it will also heat up the stations to be much warmer than they are today creating a need for those to be ventilated too.

It’s not like New York where you can just have heat vents into the street.
@TTKnumberONE
New York doesn’t really vent the heat effectively in most Manhattan stations. The stations are roasting in the summer with all of the A/C exhaust.

@Anakletos
That’s a cop out. They could use split AC if they really wanted to. You don’t need air ducts for those, just some refrigerant pipes.
@GabeLorca
Well yes, but you’d need to cool the systems at significant costs and with a tremendous amount of energy. One heat exchanger doesn’t draw a lot of energy, but thousands of them will.
@Anakletos
It’s the same as a regular AC just with the condenser and evaporator being connected by a longer refrigerant pipeline. Efficiency losses are from heat exchange through the pipe but you’d get the same effect when blowing conditioned air through ducts. So if regular central AC and air ducts would be an option, limited only by the space, then the split AC is also viable.
@coachhunter2
Only a matter of time until we have a case of mass deaths on the tube due to heat
@Kamtschi
I mean cattle has to taste good, you have no such use :D
@agarplate
I bet I taste delicious!!
@Samsterman
It would appear that only 5 degrees Celsius separates the cattle from the chattel.
@KentuckyCandy
Crack that window open and take a blast of hurricane force wind direct in to the face for the entire journey. Refreshing.
@Lots42
The Liam Neeson movie Commuter. Everyone got moved out of one of the New York City train cars because it wasn’t cold, the a.c. had busted.

Honestly that’s awesome. Bring me that extra chilly cabin!
@Due-Examination-5609
This is actually a thing with most subway lines in china as last time I was there a year ago they had this on is say 85 percent of the subway train sets
