You are absolutely right about getting ripped off in the west. I went to a small hospital in Lianjiang, Fujian China a couple months ago for gastro type tests. Went in at 8:30am, they took my blood pressure, an ultrasound on my abdomen, blood test, upper GI with the camera (while I was awake) and an electrocardiogram. All the results went to the doctor, he told me what I needed to do, and what not to do. He prescribed some medication, and I picked it up right down the hall from his office. I was out by 12:30am. Total cost? $275.00 US. That would have cost thousands of dollars in the US.

Would cost $0 in Australia because we have Medicare for all universal healthcare.

@dadonweIfare?But you paid income tax 20-30%? Chinese don’t.

@dadonweIfare?Do you need to wait? I can see the doctor when I go to the hospital now.

Yes, we pay 45% of our annual income to the Canadian government as income taxes and 13% sales tax . If we want to see a specialist, we need a referral from our family doctor and we have to wait for months to see a specialist!! I have recently booked a bone density scan and the test date is in May 2024.
@dadonweIfare
@xinaha? when you walk into the hospital, they will triage you. Depending on the severity, you may wait zero minutes to a few hours to multiple months

I didn’t need an appointment. But I had to wait my turn for the doctor to see me. It wasn’t long though.?@xinaha?

?@dadonweIfare? You are talking about emergency. For normal sickness, you still have to book an appointment with your family doctor first then he/she will decide which tests you need to do then you will have to book appointments for those tests which can take quite a while.

@gracecheung913?Now I have to wait for 4 months just to see my family doctor about my annual physical report!!

Here in the US the secretary for my mom’s heart doctor told me she will call me within a few weeks to set up a date for my mom’s surgery to have a blood clot device to be placed in her heart to catch blood clots that pass through my mom’s heart. Well, I have waited about 5 months now and the secretary hasn’t called me yet! I called her two weeks ago to ask her why she hasn’t called me yet to set up an appointment for my mom’s surgery and she told me she will call me back in about a month or so! By this rate my mom could wait a year or more to have a procedure done for her heart! A procedure her heart doctor said is vital for her to get done because the next blood clot in her heart could be the end of her! That is the kind of tragedy that is happening in a country that calls itself, “The richest and most powerful country in the world!”

@dadonweIfare? nothing is free my friend. I also live in a country with universal healthcare. It has its pros and cons. I personally would rather pay a private insurance company a rate than let the government handle my healthcare dictating what taxes I pay. Of course, it is nice to have a service I can use in case of emergency but universal healthcare is far from perfect.
@dadonweIfare
@joenicholas93? The only true measure of a successful healthcare system is that of average life expectancy.
Life expectancy in the US is around 77 years, which is lower compared to many Western countries with universal healthcare.
For instance, countries like Canada, Australia, and most of Western Europe, and rich Asian nations like Japan, Korea, and Singapore typically report life expectancies of around 83 years.
The US spends a significant portion of its GDP on healthcare, higher than most other countries, but this spending does not necessarily translate into better health outcomes like increased life expectancy. This is partly due to inefficiencies in the system and high costs associated with medical care and pharmaceuticals.
@joenicholas93
@dadonweIfare? Many variables go into the measure of life expectancy. I argue that life expectancy is attributed more to lifestyle and diet. Americans have one of the worst diets in the world. Of course, health care has a huge effect on life expectancy as well. I am not saying the USA has the best healthcare system. It doesn′t. My gripe is with how people quote universal healthcare as “free” and the best system that every country should adopt. Citizens of Japan and Korea also have to pay 20-30% of their medical bills plus a tax from their paychecks every month. The same for Singapore. They are mandated to pay a certain percentage through insurance.
The point I′m trying to make is that free healthcare does not exist. You are forced to pay it out of your wages. Which is distributed terribly because the government is involved.
I don′t know what the best system is but I have personal issues with the government managing my healthcare. It′s a monetary and moral issue that people have different opinions on. All that being said, I am grateful for having the peace of mind that I can go to the hospital and be served when I need it.
