When traveling to India, you don’t have to go in the cheapest train cabin, buy from hawkers, or stay at dirt cheap hostels to see the ‘real India’.

A lot of tourists, particularly younger tourists who want to ’taste’ the reality of India (seems to be the case especially for French tourists), like to ’take on’ India as some sort of challenge and come out on the other side. In my younger days I’ve even had several of this type of ‘world conqueror’ type of traveller tell me that they know India better than indians because they spend a night in a slum or have been eating on the streets etc. (WHY THOUGH?)
Most people (including indians) are not made for the kind of budget travel that truly ‘budget’ travel in India is all about. There is no baseline for what is considered appropriate/clean/safe in these kinds of scenarios (speaking as someone who has travelled across India 30+ times, from bigger tourist towns to places in the North-east with no electricity)
There is absolutely no point in putting yourself through bad hotels and trains IF you have the means to pay for better. Hotels in India are cheap, travel is cheap and you should always look at 3+ star hotels, and buying planes or luxury train/bus where possible. Poverty porn is not cute, and India has some of the best mid-top tier experiences to offer in the world.

Don’t get me started on the people that take tour busses into the slums of Rio, Cape Town, Mumbai, etc. and post pics of themselves with local children they are “helping.” It’s disgusting and they should feel bad, because they are bad. I don’t see how international sites like Viator don’t get backlash.
It’s like the people who took bus tours after hurricane Katrina, you are watching human suffering as if it was a zoo.

It is, but spending money in those places does help. I’m a huge advocate of buying locally-made things. And for people living in the slums, it’s not a post-hurricane state, but most were born there. A slum is essentially a poor village.

What is more disfiguring is the complacency of the local authorities. You can’t blame the touriste, they are helping more than the Indians…

Some Europeans make very little in their countries! Let’s not discount the fact that these budget accommodations, food, and travel are all they can afford after paying for their plane ticket.

Interesting, example of a country and approximate budget a person like that has?

Romania, where I’m from, is like this. Minimum salary after taxes is $425 per month (assuming 8hr a day, 5 days a week). Average is $985.
As you can see, even buying a return plane ticket to India or South East Asia for $600-700 would be quite a struggle for a lot of people. And then you still need to have enough money left for everything else once you get to your destination.

Yes but if you are not well off then why slum it? Better and cheaper to go too greece for a week.

I traveled to India and within weeks developed a chronic illness that comes with a neurological disability (ME/ CFS), forever changing my life.
India is a big risk for non-Indians

Why isn’t it cute? I travelled Sri Lanka, I loved the cheapest trains, street food and dirt shit hotels. I can’t see any of that where I’m from. I had a 10/10 time experiencing this part of life.
It’s ok if you don’t like. Don’t explain to other people what they’re supposed to enjoy though.

This is so stupid. If you have money but want to live frugally who cares? Let people have the experience they want.
[dexed]
Yes and no. If you want to do things frugally that is one thing but the line comes to me when you use people’s poverty as entertainment and/or represent an entire country to the world in an unbalanced way.
I’m not taking a tourist to the worst parts of my home city to have them take pictures and experience the poverty there, nor would I want my home country represented that way to the unknowing public.
aunzuk123
That sounds very manipulative to me… Doing things frugally isn’t the only way to see authenticity, but it’s not unauthentic. You insisting that people stay in nice places and stay away from the worst places is creating a false image just like those only going to the bad places are.
If my country had crippling poverty levels, I’d love that to be highlighted so something is actually done to fix it. Pretending it doesn’t exist doesn’t do anything other than improve your “image”. While in all likelihood one tourist/vlogger isn’t going to make any difference, your plan could make it even worse!
You shouldn’t be misrepresenting anywhere - whether you’re pretending that everyone lives in slums, or you’re pretending that no-one does.
[dexed]
No, I don’t insist on anything other than respect and there is a line which to me is altogether obvious. Poverty is not entertainment it’s a tragedy. There are 1.4 billion Indians exposure and knowledge of the poverty in India is not the issue. Nor is the cheap apparent sympathy of foreign tourists the solution.
Go on Viatour and look up how many slum tours there are, for example, “Explore one of the world’s largest slums, the Dharavi Slum in Mumbai, with a dedicated guide on this private tour. Learn about the history and culture of this area and the daily lives of the inhabitants through….”
What will you see from the trip photos over and over, smiling faces, lots of instagram worthy pictures with kids. The tour sites assure you it’s safe to go just don’t bring valuables of course. Maybe bring 20 rupees to throw on a few kids faces along with the assurance that some of the profits of your 20 dollar usd tour go to help the people in the slums. You are now a philanthropist for all to see.
Want to help those people, commit to donating to a legitimate NGO, give until it hurts. Let the people in poverty and in the slums live a dignified life without faux sympathy.
