不材之木._风闻

有位工匠名叫匠石，他前往齐国，来到曲辕的地方，看见一株大树生长在土神庙旁。这株树的树阴可以遮盖几千头牛;树身有百尺粗，树干高过山头80尺后才有枝叶，可用来造船的旁枝就有十几枝。围观这株巨树的人多得像到市场赶集。

There was a craftsman named Zhuangshi who went to the state of Qi and came to the place of Quyuan. He saw a big tree growing next to the Earth God Temple. The shade of this tree can cover thousands of cows; The tree body is a hundred feet thick, and the trunk is 80 feet higher than the mountain before it has branches and leaves. There are more than a dozen side branches that can be used for shipbuilding. There are as many people watching this huge tree as going to the market.

奇怪的是，匠石竟视而不见，不屑一顾。他不住脚地往前赶路。

Strangely, the craftsman turned a blind eye and disdained it. He kept movingforward without stopping.

徒弟们大开眼界，却不明白师傅的态度，追上匠石问个究竟：“自从我们跟随师傅走南闯北学手艺，从来没有碰见这样好的木材，您为什么一点也不看重它?”

The disciples broadened their horizons, but did not understand the master’s attitude. They caught up with the craftsman and asked, “Since we traveled with the master to learn craftsmanship, we have never encountered such good wood. Why don’t you value it at all

匠石回答：“不要夸这棵树了，它是脆而不坚的树木，造船沉，做棺材会很快腐烂，制成柱子会被虫蛀，打成器具会毁掉，造门会流出污浆……”匠石把它说得一无是处，认定它是不能做材料的树木，正因为没有用，所以才长得这么大，有这么长的寿命!

The craftsman replied, “Don’t praise this tree anymore. It’s a fragile and fragile tree. Shipbuilding sinks, making coffins quickly rots, making pillars can be eaten by insects, making utensils can be destroyed, and making doors can produce mud…” The craftsman dismissed it as useless and determined that it is a tree that cannot be used as a material. It is because it is useless that it has grown so large and has such a long lifespan!

貌似强大的事物往往华而不实。看问题、观察事物不能被表面所迷惑，要通过现象看清本质，否则，就会作出错误的判断。

Things that appear powerful are often flashy but not practical. When looking at problems or observing things, one should not be confused by the surface. Instead, one should see the essence through phenomena, otherwise they will make incorrect judgments.
