Makoto Watanabe, a professor of communications at Japan’s Hokkaido Bunkyo University, told the South China Morning Post that his peers lamented that Americans are now in an “unfortunate” position.

“I thought it was pretty symbolic of how polarized American politics has become in the last decade or so, with the two leaders and their respective camps having no dialogue at all between them,” he said.

Former British diplomat John Sawers told the The New York Times that the debate left him “despondent” about America: “The country we have looked to for leadership has descended into an ugly brawl.”

Taiwan’s Mandarin-speaking Yahoo News anchor Catherine Lu said she “couldn’t recognize words, just voices all intertwined together,” the South China Morning Post reported. “It is hard to make out what anyone’s viewpoint is,” she exclaimed during her live broadcast.

International reaction to the debate is in line with multiple Pew Research Center reports finding that America’s international image has suffered during Trump’s presidency. A report this month found that in nearly every country, a majority holds unfavorable views of America.

But as messy as the debate was, at least one observer noted that the tradition shouldn’t be taken for granted.

“For all the talk about how bad this debate is, at least you have one,” Hungarian journalist Andras Petho tweeted.

The paper went further, saying the event “was not a debate in any meaningful sense” but rather “an ill-tempered and at times incomprehensible squabble between two angry septuagenarians who palpably loathe each other”.

Who won the Trump-Biden debate?

The Guardian described it as a “national humiliation”.

“The rest of the world - and future historians - will presumably look at it and weep,” the paper wrote, adding that Mr Biden was the only man who looked “remotely presidential” on the stage and saying that if Mr Trump was re-elected in November, “this dark, horrifying, unwatchable fever dream will surely be the first line of America’s obituary.”

The Financial Times highlighted how the president had stoked lies about voter fraud and urged his supporters to carefully watch polling stations. “‘Dog-whistling’ is the politico-speak for such language, but it implies subtlety. Mr Trump was blatant,” it wrote.

France

“Chaotic, childish, gruelling” - that’s how French newspaper Libération described Tuesday’s debate. Le Monde agreed, calling it a “terrible storm”, and saying that the president had sought to “push his opponent off his hinges” with constant interruptions and by mocking his answers.

Germany

Der Spiegel’s analysis of the debate is headlined “A TV duel like a car accident”.

In a piece titled “Part fist-fight, part play”, Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: “Both Trump and Biden could go home satisfied because as far as the theatrical performance is concerned, both did their job properly. Donald Trump played Donald Trump, Joe Biden played Joe Biden, and fans should have liked it.”

Die Welt said the debate had revealed very little about policy. “Most importantly, it showed that America has a president whose behaviour stands out and who lacks self-control - but that’s not exactly news,” it wrote.

Italy

“Never had American politics sunk so low,” La Repubblica’s US correspondent wrote, describing the debate as “Chaotic, rowdy, and based on mutual contempt”.

Il Corriere della Sera meanwhile said President Trump’s refusal to condemn white supremacy was “a message for Black America”.

Russia

One broadcaster described it as a “one and a half-hour exchange of insults”, while another said there was “no constructive dialogue”.

“The rivals kept interrupting each other and instead of a balanced discussion they chose the path of mutual insults,” pro-Kremlin NTV television said.

Mr Biden’s description of President Trump as “Putin’s puppy” also generated comments on Russian social media. One Twitter user said: “Two old men are figuring out which of them is more worthy to become the president of the United States, but without Putin, you can’t boost your rating.”

“Insults, interruptions, noise,” Nick Robinson, a BBC journalist who moderated last year’s debate between British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wrote on Twitter.

Robinson compared the U.S. debate to a “street fight” — as did several others.

“The first debate between would-be leaders of the free world was better suited to the Colosseum of ancient Rome or a cage fight in Las Vegas,” according to the Australian.

Foreign observers saw the tone not as not just populist showboating but as evidence of a country come undone.

“Whoever is looking for an explanation for the shape the United States is currently in will find it in those 90 minutes, that should have been a political debate,” Switzerland’s right-leaning, German-language Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper wrote Wednesday. “Instead, the tradition has degenerated into cheap reality TV. What flickered across TV screens was the image of a country in chaos.”

“The spiteful debate mirrors a country that is no longer even capable of having a dignified discussion,” the editorial continued.

Global views of U.S. plunge to new lows amid pandemic, poll finds

This sentiment is not new. In recent years, Pew Research Center polls have captured growing global disillusionment with the United States under Trump.

Views of the United States among some of its closest peers have slid to the lowest level in two decades, amid clashes with foreign partners and over the president’s handling of the pandemic.

But even among U.S. critics there was a widespread assumption that American institutions would prevail.

That confidence gave other countries the ability to watch the United States with a bit of a wink, treating the Trump administration as a circus that would pack up and leave town one day. As the election nears, observers in foreign capitols are less inclined to laugh.

The debate “was truly terrible,” Anna Soubry, a former British lawmaker, wrote on Twitter. “Whatever our views let’s agree and promise we will never allow British politics to plummet to such a level.”

“The US embarrassed itself before the world for 100 minutes,” The Times of India wrote.
