OVER AND OUT
‘Together-Everyone-Achieves-More.’ (TEAM) Source–unknown
Today had long been in the diary as ‘Voice Over’ day. That means a day to record around 40 audio voice links for the China Review Studio (CRS) team for the documentary they are making about the walk called ‘A Walk through Zhejiang’. We had been given kind permission to use a state of the art studioat the Wenzhou Returned Overseas Chinese Centre for the purpose.
The China Review Studio Team have been an ever present part ofour journey and have worked incredibly hard trying to capture some of the incredible experiences and visits we have made along the way. They have been an important part of the team and this blog would be a good moment to introduce them and for Xuelin and I to thank them:
Fiona McGrady – Self-shooting Producer/Director–from Glasgow inScotland. Fiona is a Producer/Director of the series of three documentaries. She was hired by China Review Studio to be the director and joined our walk. She is a specialist in observational documentary making. The stand out moment for Fiona was the visit to the Pan’an Tea God ceremony and the old covered bridge in Yongkang. Whilst the walk for us is finished for Fiona she now goes into editing the final series of films.
Yiwei Xue (Sami) – Producer with China Review Studio. Xue lives inBeijing but studied film production in Los Angeles and studied English at university which included study in Lancaster in England. Xue has worked in fictional film making where you start with a script and then film it, whereas in a documentary you start with an idea, film it and then write around it. Xue has been most inspired by the natural beauty and by the visit to the disabled children’s unit at Yongkang Hospital.
Jiale Li – No 1 Cameraman and Drone Operator. Lianyun Port, Jiangsu Province. Li studied photography at Nanjing Normal University. Li is acontractor to CRS and has his own company. he specializes in documentary making. He was recently awarded a Gold Medal and Best Director Award at the Golden Pearl Award Ceremony in Miami for his short film about the natural beauty of China. We had met Li before when he had come out to film part of our 2015 walk from Beijing to Hangzhou. The opening ceremony, visit to the hospitalas he has a daughter who is two years old so this touched him. Everyday he video his children. Challenge weather carrying long distance heavy camera.
Li Ming – Sound Engineer – Shenyang Province. Ming has kept our spirits up with his good humour along the way. He has been doing sound engineering for fifteen years. In the past he has worked mostly on TV and in movies. Not only has he worked on movies he has acted in movies. Like Li he is also a freelance recordist so works on various projects. His memory of us walking in the very heavy rain was a particular strong memory as the challenge was to record the sound without getting electronic equipment soaked. Xiajiang Village was his highlight.
Ding Zhipeng (Martin) – Photographer with CRS. He is from Shandong Province and studied Editing and Directing at University in Shandong. Martin’s role is to focus on the individuals and close up shots rather than the more general views. We had met Martin before as he had come out to cover our 2018walk from Beijing to Caofeidian. He also has an extremely good singing voice, his mother is a local opera singer and he does solo performances of modern songs. He was really impressed by Xiajiang Village and by the visit to the disabled children’s hospital in Yongkang.
Cheng Xiangdong – Driver – From Hubei Province and has been working in Hangzhou for 18 years and does mostly tourist transportation. He is married and has two children – 22 and 13. It is not that often that he is away from home for so long. Mr Cheng said he was impressed by the fact that no matter how hotit got we still walk despite not being very healthy (I think he means me). Hishappiness comes from his clients and customers being happy and calling him after a job finishes to thank him. We will make sure to do that.
To be quite honest Xuelin and I have been apprehensive about having a documentary team with us because our works are intensely personal and it is difficult to hand over how the story is told to someone else. The team from CRS worked hard to let us know what they had and what they felt they needed from us and that eased our concerns.
The other worry we had was because we had had media teams join us on previous walks but they had given up because walks (and we) were ‘boringand repetitive’. In fairness trying to make an old couple, who no-one has ever heard of, walking along busy roads each day for a month sound interesting is a challenge for any film maker. But with the beautiful scenery, historic culture and amazing people of Zhejiang behind us and the world-class skills of CRS film production team – anything is possible.
